The Mercedes Benz W-123 Model was the replacement for the W114/115 autos and sold from 76-85. This was one of the most successful cars produced by Mercedes selling over two and a half million cars during its production.
The W123 was the first factory Benz to be produced as a station wagon and one of the first European turbo charged cars sold in the diesel trim. This was the first model by Mercedes to offer an Anti Lock Brake System, as well as a self leveling suspension option.
Due to Department of Transportation regulations, the Mercedes model sold in the United States had a few exterior differences from their brothers sold in Europe. The bumpers where larger and different to meet the crash test requirements, and the head lights where sealed beam type. Additionally Cars sold in Europe could be ordered, with cloth seats, non electric windows, and without air conditioning, all of these options where included on the American Spec cars.
The only models officially sold in the United States by Mercedes USA where the 240D, 280E, 280CE and the 300 Series D/TD/CD. However the rest of the model line was imported by private individual and importers and sold to consumers on the grey market. This allowed customers to get the increase power and options of the European W-123 autos in the United states, however no dealer service or repair is available for these models in most cases.
